Camino Frances day 8: Nájera to Grañón (27,9km)

Woke up early once more and started probably one of the most straight-line going days of the Camino. In the first 15km you only need to make one turn and the next 12km could just as well be walked without turns. But that is not what happened…

The first village we passed was just before sunrise. People were still drunk on the streets celebrating their fiesta day. Just after the village, a massive rainfall came out of nowhere with a thunderstorm following it. I had to walk to the next village in wet socks before changing for clean ones in the middle of a street like a homeless person.

The second part of the road today was mainly on gravel with spiky rocks. My feet were hurting like hell. Once the sun came out it was crazy hot like the days before. That’s just when the fun began…

With Veronika and Jasmine we were heading towards the place we booked online. It looked great in the photos. My app recommended the place because it was supposedly the only alberge with Wi-Fi in the four-street village of Grañón. Our place appeared to be 1km outside of the city in the middle of nowhere.

I thought that a shortcut there would help a lot. The road led though fields with a blazing sun above our heads and no wind to bring any fresh air around. Cool thing was that we all saw a deer gracefully run over the field right next to us. Or it might have been a mirage from all the dehydration. Who knows?

When we got to the place on the map finally in the middle of a forest with nothing else around, they told us that it’s just for dinner if we ordered it. The real place was another kilometer from there. Luckily, they dropped us off with a car. The real place looked like a total dump. I just hope the ceiling won’t fall on me during my sleep and hold on a little longer.

Dinner in the village was actually really good. We did a movie night with “Into the Wild”, followed by an 80s abs workout program. At least we can still have fun on days when our feet really are killing us. Hopefully there are fewer gravel roads tomorrow.
