This is how pilgrims live. You check-in to a common living area with bunkbeds, wash your clothes every single evening & then eat like a horse. Together with cafe visits, a 25€/day budget will be fine.
The day itself was the most dangerous one so far. I was forced to walk on narrow car roads with moderate to heavy traffic. I even had to do 2km on a national highway. The next few days are most likely very similar.
Getting out of Coimbra was like a maze. The city was badly marked with the pilgrim route. A critical pedestrian tunnel was closed and I spent a kilometer walking back and around. Later, I heard that others just forced the builders’ fences open and walked through.
My feet still hurt like hell in the morning. After 9km, I decided to make a radical change and put on my extra soft wool socks meant for cold season hiking. Now my feet heat up extremely fast, but it feels so good to walk without constant pain. Success!
I was so happy when finishing my hike today that I started spontaneously dancing down the shopping street full of people.
It’s fun being silly every once in a while. Life can’t be serious all the time or you get bitter.
