Camino Portugues day 18: Carreço (POR) to A Guarda (ESP) (22,9km)

I crossed the border today on a ferry (read: small boat). It was just the crew, two cars and twenty pilgrims crossing the river in a storm.

In the morning, as I reached the trail, I saw a pilgrim that I passed a little later. By then, both of us had actually lost the correct way. We decided to go for an adventure and try going by the ocean coast the whole way to the harbour.

Today I walked with Katya from Ukraine, who is an architect who has lived in Lithuania several times. Walking away from the yellow arrows was a fun adventure. I got a lot of cool ocean pictures, saw sea fortifications and even wandered through a pine forest.

Then we ended up at a cafe that was close to Spain from the oceanside. Katya took a boat taxi across in a tiny fisherman’s boat and I continued towards the harbour. It had been raining a little and was quite windy, but now the real storm started. Wind blew rain horizontally into my face. I was soaking wet by the time I reached the harbour half an hour later.

When I arrived, I heard from the Slovak girls Magda and Jane that there were another three hours to wait before the ferry crossed the sea. The storm was so strong that no one else dared to cross anymore with their small boats. For me it was a good change to put on dry socks and have a nice big meal. Mmm burger…

The ride across was just ten minutes or so, but it felt a lot warmer in Spain. Wind had disappeared and the rain stopped. Our hike to the albergue took us through eucalypt forests on a mountainside.

The weather changes every hour next to the ocean, so anything is possible. I hope to go far tomorrow, but let’s see.
