Camino Frances day 0: Travel to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

Two planes, one bus and two trains later, I got from home to the beginning of the journey. Despite some logistical difficulties around trains, it was managed all in one day.

Got here early enough to get stamped in the local pilgrim office and go uphill to see the fortress and landscape views.

It is definitely warmer here than what I have recently been used to, but give it two weeks and I can manage life here. The number of pilgrims coming off the last train was quite small. Only five people other than me. The oldest pilgrim I saw today was an 80-year-old lady. I sincerely hope that she can manage the heatwave spike promised for Sunday.

I feel very much at home here. Tomorrow I will find out if all that preparation has been enough. Just in case, I will add a couple of motion restraining plasters around my knee in the morning. Hiking throughout the Pyrenees is where a lot of pilgrims already get foot problems. As an additional precaution, I will get a wooden cane in the morning once the shops open. Slow and steady wins the long race.

Can’t wait for tomorrow to start!
