Camino Frances day 14: Carrión de los Condes to Shahagún (38,39km)

Week 2 complete. Walked 201km this week. Slightly over 1/2 to Santiago done and 40% of the total planned distance. This week I also spent time recovering, therefore it can only be counted as highly successful.

Today I started hiking at 4am. Maybe the last time I need to go out this early. Two more days and I should be out of the “meseta”. The loneliest and mentally hardest stretch I did first thing in the morning. It was not so bad walking it at night and seeing the stars. Once the sun came up I understood once again why 17km in a straight line with nothing to look at is boring. Still got a magical sunrise moment captured on camera.

After the mentally hard stretch came a physically painful one. 6 kilometers of walking on nothing but stones of various sizes. It took a bit to recover from it, but it seems good.

Was even able to walk besides the highway all the way to Shahagún. The weather is +35 today, so overall, super happy that the last 12km went smoothly and surprisingly fast. Feet sure are used to the road now. A bit different story still when I enter cities with hard surface.

I was not sure how long of a distance I wanted to walk today. I had several good options, but I just kept going. I could have done several more kilometers without issues, but there is no sense of risking it all now that I have just found my strength. The next two days I will try to stay around thirty per day again.

I can’t wait to walk some more tomorrow. Even the most mundane things become exciting when done right.
