Second week 208km on foot. I feel like I can even do a bit more next week.
Today was just perfect! Even the less perfect moments did not matter. I had a short highway detour in the morning to Unquera. Poof, I was magically through the Cantabria region. Seems like each region until Santiago will take me a week. The Basque Country was in the first week and now for a week I will be going through the Asturias region.
Today was mostly on gavel. It was a very welcome change. Looks like Cantabria was the asphalt region on the Norte. I was really looking forward to the singing rocks today near which I took this picture of horses by the ocean cliffs.
The whole walk next to the ocean was around 15 kilometers in one go. The first five kilometers was complete nature hiking. Local cows that were on the trail had mowed the grass nicely, so the going was easy. Amazing views all day long next to the ocean. It’s hard to say which was the best.
So what I call the singing rocks is a cave opening several tens of meters inland where ocean water gushes outwards with waves. It should be spectacular around a full moon, but the situation today was far from that. It was still impressive to be there and listen to the ocean and hear violent shouts up from the cave.
If there was any part today that I would change, then it would be the walk through Cué just before reaching Llanes. There was a perfectly good hilltop path that led close to Llanes that I decided to skip in favor of following the alternative route from the app.
Llanes was the perfect town to finish the day, because if I walked any further, I would have been in Poo.
Its pretty much a golden rule here on the Norte that fast straight roads with asphalt are way less fun than the slow and crooked route options. It might take longer to reach Santiago, but you will get there with a big smile on your face.
