Camino Norte day 21: San Esteban to Novellana (22.7km)

It’s been a strange week. I did manage to get 185km further. It is less than even in the first week. I was planning to do my biggest week yet, but have slowed down to get rid of my foot infection.

Today I had an absolutely perfect hiking experience. It took 2km in the very early morning to get into Muros de Nalón on a dangerous car road, but before sunrise there are not that many drivers.

Starting from Muros up to Soto de Luña, it was 18km of absolute perfection. Beautiful hilly landscapes, tiny cute villages, lots of natural walking terrain and even a view of the ocean.

From Soto de Luña onwards there is a trail split. The official route goes 18km through hillside forests without stops. That was too much for me and besides, I really wanted to see more of the ocean.

I walked a kilometer on the alternative route along a countryside highway and then started hiking slowly from Aluberne village into Novellana. Other than the ocean, there is nothing that special about these villages, but the nature trail between them was a lot of fun.

Tomorrow I have free breakfast at the hotel I am staying at, so I will leave an hour after sunrise. To make sure my foot can heal completely, I will walk an even shorter day than today. After that, I will start doing my normal daily distances again. I can always change into hiking sandals in the afternoon to make sure my feet stay dry.

Today I made lots of small bench stops to take shoes and socks off. This was to keep my bad foot from getting sweaty and infecting the area with the anti-bacterial cream on it. Seems like putting a plaster on the toes across the bad one is perfect for reducing friction. Things are looking up again.

There are only three more days left inside the Asturias region. I can’t wait to see more of the oceanside hiking trails it has to offer, before I enter Galicia and start walking inland towards Santiago.
