Camino via de la Plata day 0: Packing & Preparation

New year, new Camino adventure! Pretty much since I finished the last hike, I started preparing for the next one. This one is mostly on flat farm roads. Mostly desert with some farms around. The distances needed to see the next café or accommodation become quite far apart from each other. Since I am going in Spring then, I need to be prepared for pretty much any weather.

I wanted to pack as light as possible while still having comfort both on and off the trail. The whole gear setup (including the clothes on my back) weighs less than 5kg. Having to carry more food and water for this trail will still add some extra kilos.

Training for flat long-distance road walks is quite easy when you live in Estonia. I must have walked around 1500km since last June when I finished Camino Norte. A little forest walk before work and some more after work and the distances add up.

I walked so much that for the last month, my right foot started to hurt already. The last few weeks have been focused more on recovery than walking.

Two weeks ago, I also started doing some gear testing in local cold conditions. I was very disappointed in the shoes I originally planned to have for this trial. They kept hurting my feet so badly when just walking around the block. I chose to go with old worn-in sneakers that I trust. Only if it’s very rainy then I am worried about how they will handle mud.

I am flying tomorrow to Sevilla and plan to escape the city as fast as possible. The biggest festival of the year is happening there on Sunday – Semana Santa. This holy week lasts for 7-days and ends with Easter. Spanish locals are traveling a lot these next few days around the country. Finding accommodation and food might be a really big issue. The further I can get from Seville, the easier life should get.

Since I land in Seville in the evening, I am not sure if I can get out of the city. For the first time, I have made 2 non-refundable bookings for the same night. This way I can stay in Seville or just 10km away based on how things go.
