Camino via de la Plata day 5: Monesterio to Calzadilla de los Barros (26.9km)

Its almost as cold as yesterday, but way more wind and rain. Did not feel like pushing another 17.5km to Zafra. Roads are getting very muddy and the nice concrete way markers disappeared a little after Monesterio.

The 20km walk from Monesterio to Fuente de Cantos had 2 different phased. First you walk between olive tree gardens for 7km slowly uphill. Then you see Fuente de Cantos from 13km away from a hilltop. The views decending from the foresty hills into farmlands were amazing. Especially seeing the endless strong wind dance with the crops growing on the fields.

There are some livestock farms on both sides of Fuente de Cantos. The trail is getting extremely muddy now. Water crossings sometimes have stones placed for getting over easily, but not always. I had luck and a car just arrived when I was just about to go barefoot. Instead I got a 10m car ride across.

With the weather slightly warmer I don’t feel frozen anymore. I did arrive an hour early for the albergue here, but luckily there was a church next door and the doors were open. The albergue even has a free washing machine and dryer. Will have some extra toasty clean hiking clothes for tomorrow.

I have slight pain on the top of my right foot arch for a few days now. I adjusted shoelaces differently today. Will see tomorrow morning if it was helpful. In my mind I was ready for a 42km today already, weather was not supporting the idea. With less rain and some sunlight, I would have pushed it for sure.
