Camino via de la Plata day 8: Almendralejo to Torremejía (14.6km)

I was given a few good hours without rain in the morning. I used them for speedhiking into Torremejía. Getting out of Almendralejo was really simple. Another rail bridge and highway bridge crossing later I found myself back on the open plains.

Half of the walk today was just to connect back with the official trail. The official trail follows an ancient Roman road to Melida as I understand from some markers.

Right before Torremejía I saw how yesterday pilgrims had issues going around a large muddy puddle. Since it had not rained for a few hours I was able to cross it easily. So many shoes before me had sunk deep into the mud.

The worst part was in front of the Torremejía village. The official Camino trail went underneath a rail bridge. The trail was completely under water. I walked without shoes through the tunnel and did not see the trail appear from under the temporary river. So I decided to instead go back a bit and use the longer road across a car bridge.

When entering Torremejía it started to rain already. It should stop by tomorrow evening or so. Meanwhile there will be a thunderstorm in a few hours. It did not seem like a good idea to push onwards.

After tomorrow the weather should normalize. Not sure how long it takes for the crazy water crossings to disappear. I have read that pilgrims a few days behind me are in big trouble on the trail and are hiking motorways instead.
