Daylight savings time made the morning darker than usual. The Camino trail was following the N-630 road into Merida on farm roads. The landscape was completely flat and the trail underwater. Many pilgrims (including me) walked the car road into Merida. With only two cars per hour passing me, it was quite relaxing.
I walked about 2 kilometers more than I marked as the daily distance because of the car road, but it was worth it. I reached the city in dry shoes. There tiny short rainfalls, but nothing to be concerned about. Tomorrow should be similar and then the weather turns really good.
Merida was totally the highlight of the day. I walked on two Roman bridges, saw the remains of the old city, a well preserved aqueduct system and a water reservoir with some extra buildings below.
Out of Merida I decided to follow the actual Camino trail once again. It was quite hilly so the water was flowing away. A few places to step or jump over but nothing major.
It might be worse tomorrow as I go through flatter areas. Still I want to go around the countryside and not the car roads. I am staying I’m the first village after Merida. I was afraid that there might be too many people in the next one and the places are full.
I will see everyone tomorrow anyways. Not a lot of choices of where to stay up ahead. Feet feel so good that I might do a crazy long day or two once the water obstacles start to disappear.
