Camino via de la Plata day 26: Sarria to Ligonde (36.8km)

I started from Sarria with the sunrise. There were far less pilgrims on the streets than I thought. Just a few here or there. I passed them within half an hour and rest of the walk up to Portomarin was in blissful silence with beautiful nature around.

Normally I have taken the shorter norther route out of Sarria. I clearly remembered it being an extremely boring straight line car road walk. The official trail goes the southern route. It still goes mainly on car roads, but it is full of twists and turns. Never a dull moment.

It was my first time walking into Portomarin later than sunrise. Sarria pilgrims end their walk here. Around sunrise this place seems to be always covered in heavy fog. During the day the view from both sides of the river was great.

On the way to Portomarin I passed the 100km trail marker. I ended the day at 75km left to Santiago in a tiny albergue in a small village. Just seven beds here and surprisingly many pilgrims were still walking in the afternoon.

The trail from Portomarin to Ligonde was less fun than the morning. Lots of walking in a straight line following a somewhat busy car road. It got a lot better after a weird highway crossing near O Hospital.

I ended the day an hour earlier than planned. This leaves more than enough time to recover for tomorrow.

The small albergue in Ligonde runs on donations and is hosted by volunteers as all donation based albergues have been so far. They provide dinner and breakfast. I even got to use the washing machine. I feel very blessed to have gotten a bed here.
