Camino Estonia day 1: Tallinn – Saku (15km)

I finally got to start a Camino from my doorstep!

I left home in the afternoon to avoid heavy winds. It was a perfectly dry and sunny day.

I used medium weight socks this time and added a plaster over the blister from yesterday. I had been planning the route for this opening day for several months now. I wanted the perfect experience for myself.

I headed straight for Järve forest to get away from all the traffic and noise of the city. I followed cross country skiing trails along the railway that is heading towards Saku. I spent half of the day just getting out of the city because for a kilometer I walked stubbornly in deep snow next to the railroad. It was a great pathway on all other seasons of the year.

At the end of Tallinn I switched to Männiku road. It has over 7km long straight line pedestrian road with lots of chairs going right towards Saku brewery. This pathway is greatly loved by locals. I always see there people running and cycling, no matter the weather or season.

I connected with the actual Camino Estonia trail near a 24h gas station with a cafe. I did not notice a single yellow arrow. I might have been too busy enjoying the sunshine. It does not happen that often and the sun is up only from 9am to 4pm in January.

Since I started so late, then Saku church was already closed today. I will collect my stamp on another Sunday, when I continue my adventure further.

Getting back to Tallinn from Saku using public transport was very quick and easy. Even though I took an hour break in Saku brewery pub after finishing, then my shirt, scarf and hat were still partially wet. For next stages I will carry a backpack again and have some clean clothes for after finishing. The stage today had everything at hand so there was no need to carry anything with me.
