Camino Estonia day 4: Rabivere – Rapla (17km)

It’s been almost two months since my last walk. I was focused on preparing and walking the coastal Camino in Portugal. I arrived back to Estonia last weekend. There the farmers where harvesting cabbages and here the fields are still frozen.

From Rabivere manor the road went through nature. Most of the day was spent on gravel roads that half of the time were frozen solid or covered in a thin layer of mud above the frozen layer. Still the weather is was perfectly sunny and I could do hiking mostly with just two layers of clothing.

It is now warm enough that I can enjoy stops along the road. I just need to add a puffy jacket as a third layer to keep me warm and enjoy the sunshine. Trees still don’t feel warm enough to start growing leaves, but the birds sure are loving it. No bugs yet other than butterflies.

I brought hiking sticks with me for the first time on this trip. It was lovely going around the quiet countryside with nothing but birdsong most of the time. Even the car roads have become quiet that the trail goes on.

There was a very confusing moment near Alu-Metsküla where the GPS trail showed to go through a construction site of a future high-speed railroad. I hope they make corrections as in the future you will first need to cross the railway bridge and then switch to the gravel road.

The loveliest place on the trail was Alu village with its tiny lakes and park. The last stretch from Alu to Rapla city was also nice as you started to see the two towers of the church from two kilometers away. The church itself is open just on Sundays, so I will need to think about how to get my stamp and proceed further.

As the days are getting warmer, it is becoming easier and easier to walk long distances. It will soon get complex to start and finish the day in Tallinn using public transport.
