Camino via de la Plata day 12: Cáceres to Cañaveral (45.4km)

I started the day still in the dark. Its not a big deal to do in cities. Getting out of the city was planned beside a small car road and then switch to the Camino trail for the rest of the day. The car road CC-38 was extremely busy with traffic. Luckily only 3km was needed before I could see the Camino trail and feel safe again.

Walking the first 10km today into Casar de Cáreces was fun. There was a clear sunrise, cows on a meadow and fog all at the same time. In the town I was lucky and arrived just as the grocery store opened. I desperately needed more than my usual 1L water bottle. I got another liter of orange juice and a freshly baked bread to accompany for the next 33km.

This long 33km stretch without any food or water options is not even the longest on this Camino. This solitary experience can be divided into tree parts: first I walked on the back of high hill overlooking everything for as far as the eye can see in pretty much all directions, then there was a long car road walking along the familiar N-630 over two bridges overlooking a massive water reservoir and then finally there was natural terrain hiking with some animals and two sun shelters, but nothing really to see.

In total I spent 11 hours just walking forward. I had to take my shoes off for a water crossing just once because a snake was blocking my trail to drink some water. I went the other way around the muddy water. There were some cows and sheep on the trail but that has become very common by now.

I only spent 45 minutes taking a rest today. Feet feel still fine, but overall a bit tired. I almost hiked from sunrise to sunset. Longer walking days than this do not seem very realistic. Will tone it down just barely under 40 for a while. I do like going far, but still slow enough to enjoy the views.
